Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was born in Italy and became known throughout the world as a great educational innovator. She was encouraged by her parents to pursue her dreams and she entered medical school as the only female student. Trained in science and medicine, she used her skillful powers of observation to analyse young children’s most natural and effective learning strategies that she found rooted in a series of “sensitive periods.”

Maria Montessori began working with children who were considered unteachable. Through her observations, she discovered that every child is teachable and capable of learning as long as they were exposed to the proper prepared environment and hands-on educational materials. Maria Montessori created the “Montessori Method” and began using her materials with children of all abilities. Today reproductions of her materials are still used in Montessori classrooms on every continent of the world.

“Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world” – Maria Montessori
